Beyond the racial dichotomy. Reading Lorde’s the uses of Erotic power in Sciamma’s Girlhood

‘Pornography […] represents the suppression of true feeling’, notes Lorde (1984, p. 54). Marieme comes to Ismaël’s room with a strong feeling for herself and him. Spectators have the opportunity to witness the dominant demand from a black female teenager in a sexual relationship but not in a forceful way. Marieme touches his arm, he turns back, and she asserts ‘undress’, ‘keep going’ and ‘turn over’. If feminist film studies are so familiar with the male gaze that see women as objects of Berger (1973), Sciamma directs the shot to capture Ismaël, follow the touch of Marieme on his curve from his back to his bump. The camera shows us the male body and Marieme with a personal shot that follows her gaze.
